Inspired by the folk tale red riding hood, this cloak is for desperate citizens of Turkey to “hide.” In the summer of 2019, Mount Ida in Turkey which is supposed to be a protected area was subject to major destruction. The use of cyanide in the region to extract minerals posed very serious health and environmental risks. All of this for a gold mine. Over 195
thousand trees were cut and with this a beautiful area full of culture was subject to grand destruction. Mount Ida is not just a beautiful green scenery, it is also a setting to Homer’s pen and has an important place in mythology. That’s why the silhouette of Eros is crying on the shoulder of this cloak. The idea came together once I knew the idea the cloak would
stand for as well as the style of it. I sewed together green fabric pieces, flowers made out of fabric to create the green scenery and embroidered tears on the Eros figure. The materials are all being used for the second time therefore making it a sustainable piece itself.
