The performance is based on a scene from the “greatest film of all time” Jeanne Dielman by Chantal Akerman from the 1970s. In this scene, Akerman masterfully captures the chaos and symphony of Jeanne Dielman's everyday life and surroundings, imbuing mundane activities with a profound sense of ritual and repetition. Transposing this ritualistic essence into a modern-day setting, the performance unfolds in the artist's own kitchen, where they partake in the ritual of drinking rakı. Rakı, a traditional Turkish alcoholic beverage, is steeped in cultural significance and typically consumed in a specific setting with prescribed rituals. By relocating rakı from its traditional setting to a modern environment, the performance questions the core of ritual. What persists when familiar elements are removed? This disruption prompts viewers to ponder the essence of tradition and cultural identity in a changing world, highlighting the significance of reinterpreting familiar practices.

And so şahmeran became duru bebekoğlu (2022)

This performance came to be when I realized I was crossing paths with this mythological character more and more and how much of her I saw in my modern daily life. I had eyes all over me. Especially my body which I couldn’t escape. There is also a reading of it which is the East and the West crossing paths. Perhaps with Şahmeran being a Eastern figure then my nakedness, and comfort of it coming from the West. My identity here in the UK. Yet in both I have eyes all over me. I watch, you watch me, we watch each other. This was increasingly clear over fights I had with my family over the making of this film.

Cheese/Water/Rakı

These were the tastes that I know, essential to many tables I have been in, easy to recreate here and share within a circle of people. Passing on the words, rakı, and cheese. It is meant to be a ritualistic practice while listening to parts of my stories. I leave the rest to the performance to tell. Leaving a space to play with words, explain and share and infuse ourselves within a spirit. In soil comes from this idea of root and soak.
